Troubleshooting
Problem
This document provides information on setting up an IBM display workstation to generate a host print screen rather than a local print screen.
Resolving The Problem
IBM display workstations have the ability to generate a local print screen where the information on the screen is printed directly to a parallel-attached printer or a system or host print screen where the information on the screen is used to generate a spooled file on the system. This document explains how to set up the most common IBM display workstations (namely the IBM InfoWindow 3477, IBM InfoWindow II 3486, and IBM InfoWindow II 3487 models) to generate a system or host print screen.

Setting up an IBM InfoWindow II 3486 or 3487 to Generate a Host Print Screen (Rather Than a Local Print Screen)
The following instructions are adapted from the IBM InfoWindow II 3486 User's Guide (GA18-7097-0) and the IBM InfoWindow II 3487 User's Guide (GA18-7098-0):1. While powered on, press the Setup key (or Shift + Setup on an IBM Enhanced keyboard) to enter Online Setup mode. 2. Move the cursor to "Set Up printer", and press the Enter key.

SETUP3. Move the cursor to "Print key". Then, move the cursor to "System", and press the Space Bar key to select.
This causes the display workstation to generate a host print screen on the IBM System i system when the Print key is pressed. If this is set to "Local", pressing the Print key causes the display workstation to generate a local print screen, printing the screen to a printer attached to the display workstation rather than generating a spooled file on the System i system.
Note: The options available on the "Set Up Printer" panel depend on if the display workstation is a monochrome model or color model. The Trim border option has choices of "Intensity" and "Normal" for monochrome displays and has choices of "White" and "Green" for color displays. The following example shows the layout for the color model.

SETUP4. Press F3 (Save and Exit) to save the change and to exit Online Setup mode. 5. Press the Setup key (or Shift + Setup on an IBM Enhanced keyboard) to enter communication mode. 6. Sign on the system, press the Print key, and verify that a host print screen was generated. This is typically be a spooled file named QSYSPRT that is associated with the current interactive job. Therefore, the spooled file is found by running the Work with Job (WRKJOB) command with the default parameter of JOB(*) and selecting Option 4 (Work with spooled files).

Note: The IBM InfoWindow and IBM InfoWindow II User's Guide manuals are not available online in Adobe Acrobat PDF format and are no longer available for purchase from IBM Publications. However, a hard-copy of the User's Guide manual would have been shipped with the IBM InfoWindow or IBM InfoWindow II display device.
