A Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive client set up with server-only session initiation does not use the schedmode option from the associated client options set.
Answer
If you set sessioninitiation serveronly option in the local client options file, you must also set schedmode prompted in the local client options file.
When a client is set up with the sessioninitiation serveronly option, the client is not allowed to initiate contact to the Tivoli Storage Manager server. Because the client cannot initiate a session to the server, the client is not able to retrieve options from the client options set on the Tivoli Storage Manager server.
The result is that a value of schedmode prompted specified in the client options set on the server is not used. If the local client options file does not specify the schedmode option, the client scheduler uses the default value for schedmode, which is polling. Therefore, the client scheduler will attempt to start the scheduler with schedmode polling.
In this scenario, when the client attempts to contact the Tivoli Storage Manager server, the server refuses the connection attempt because the sessioninitiation option is set to serveronly. The following error is logged in the dsmerror.log of the client:
ANS1382E Server does not allow client-initiated connections for this node.
Also, on initial setup, you must start the scheduler in the foreground so that the password can be entered and then stored in the password file. After the password file is generated, the Tivoli Storage Manager client scheduler can then be started in the background. If the password file is not generated and the scheduler is running in the background, the Tivoli Storage Manager client will not be able to prompt for the password and the following error will be generated in the dsmerror.log file:
ANS2050E TSM needs to prompt for the password but cannot prompt because the process is running in the background.
