Symptom
- The server abends after you install NetWare 5.1 support pack 3 under network stress.
- The server may hang with a black screen after the abend if "auto restart after abend=1".
- The message "Multiple abends are occurring - Processor halted" may occur.
- A hang occurs after the CE100B.LAN driver is loaded.
The symptoms were seen consistently when using the Norton AntiVirus software to scan files over the network.
Systems running a DHCP server have an increased chance of seeing the conditions.
The symptoms may occur on any server using an integrated IBM Intel based 10/100 Ethernet chipset or an IBM Intel based 10/100 Ethernet adapter (see descriptions below).
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM
xSeries servers:
- An xSeries 342, type 8669, any model
- An xSeries 330, type 8674, any model
- An xSeries 330, type 8654, any model
- An xSeries 300, type 8672, any model
- An xSeries 232, type 8668, any model
- An xSeries 220, type 8646, any model
- An xSeries 220, type 8645, any model
- An xSeries 200, type 8479, any model
- An xSeries 200, type 8478, any model
The system is configured with the following options:
- IBM eServer xSeries 10/100 Ethernet Adapter, Option part number 06P3601, replacement part number (FRU) 06P3609
- Dual-Port 10/100 Ethernet Adapter, Option part number 22P4901, replacement part number (FRU) 22P4909
- Netfinity 10/100 Ethernet Adapter, Option part number 34L0901, replacement part number (FRU) 30L7583
- Netfinity 10/100 Ethernet Adapter 2, Option part number 34L1501, replacement part number (FRU) 34L1509
- IBM Netfinity 10/100 Ethernet Security Adapter, Option part number 34L4601, replacement part number (FRU) 34L4609
- 100/10 EtherJet PCI Adapter WOL, Option part number 08L2565, replacement part number (FRU) 08L2566
- 100/10 EtherJet PCI Adapter, Option part number 08L2549, replacement part number (FRU) 08L2550
- 100/10 EtherJet PCI Adapter WOL, Option part number 85H9921, replacement part number (FRU) 85H9928
The following network operating system (NOS) is affected:
- Novell NetWare, version 5.1, with Service Pack 3
The NetWare LAN driver (CE100B.LAN) for the IBM Intel based 10/100 Ethernet adapter is affected.
Solution
The abend symptom can be fixed by either of the following:
- Installing the newer CE100B.LAN driver from the \tools directory of the support pack
OR
- Installing the newer CE100B.LAN driver from the IBM eServer xSeries and IBM Netfinity 10/100 Ethernet Adapter for Novell NetWare and OS/2 version 5.0 or higher diskette (P/N 32P0268).
Steps to install the new driver
- Put the new CE100B.LAN driver onto a diskette or the server boot partition (i.e. c:\nwserver).
- Restart the server and boot DOS (do not allow NetWare to boot).
- Type server -na in your NetWare boot directory (i.e. C:\nwserver\server -na).
- At the server console prompt, type netbasic
- At the server console prompt, type shell
- At the netbasic prompt, copy the ce100b.lan driver to the sys:\system directory: copy sourcepath\ce100b.lan sys:\system\ce100b.lan
- Type quit to exit netbasic.
- Type Restart at the server console prompt to restart the server.
Additional information
NetWare 5.1 support pack 3 installs CE100B.LAN driver version 2.28.
Per the NW51SP3.TXT file contained in the support pack, there are known issues with the driver. However, the newer version of CE100B.LAN was not certified in time to be included in the support pack.
NOTE: The new CE100B.LAN driver is included in the \tools directory of the support pack.
