Serial console redirection ceases when the IMM is reset - IBM System x

Problem

A serial console redirection session will be lost when the serial port access method is configured as "Shared" and the Integrated Management Module (IMM) is reset. The only way to recover the connection is to reboot the system. You can check the serialport access method setting by navigating to the following menus: System Settings --> Devices and I/O ports --> Console Redirection Settings.

Symptom

A serial console redirection session will be lost when the serial port access method is configured as "Shared" and the Integrated Management Module (IMM) is reset. The only way to recover the connection is to reboot the system.

You can check the serial port access method setting by navigating to the following menus:

  • Select System Settings, Devices and I/O ports, Console Redirection Settings.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

Workaround

Select Disabled for the serial port access method (After setting saved, have to re-initialize UEFI (reboot system))

Additional information

This behavior is working as designed. To use serial sharing through the COM port, you must perform the workaround.

Refer to the published Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) specification at the following URL:

From this IPMI specification, the serial sharing access mode must be disabled to keep the serial connector mux set to system. Refer to Chapter 14.2.3 to 14.2.8 for details.
