Question & Answer
Question
Are the SAP transports delivered with the Pack for SAP Applications compatible between different Pack versions (7.0.0.0-8.0.0.1)?
Cause
The transports (delivered in the RFC folder of the installation media) contain SAP objects necessary for the Pack functionality. An example of such object is the service function Z_RFC_DS_SERVICE.
There may be several versions Pack installations in the user environment, connecting to the same SAP Server. Or, the users may upgrade the Pack version and need to keep the SAP side in sync.
Answer
Note: for information specific to version 8.0.0.2, see technote 2002083.
Up to (and including) version 7.0, the transported objects are backwards (but not forward) compatible. For example, Pack version 6.5 will work with version 7.0 transports (but not the other way around: version 7.0 will not work with 6.5 transports).
Version 7.1 introduces version named SAP objects (for example, Z_RFC_DS_SERVICE_V7_1). This removes the backward compatibility. Older versions of the Pack will not be able to use the version 7.1 or later transports. Also, Pack version 7.1 and later will only work with their own version transports.
Including the product version in the object names allows the co-existence of multiple Pack version objects on the SAP Server. For example, a user may install both transports from version 7.0 and 7.1 on the same SAP Server. Each Pack version will use its own set of objects.
