Running the ws_ant.bat or schemaGen.bat commands in WebSphere Application Server V7.0 results in error, "setupCmdLine.bat was unexpected at this time"

Troubleshooting

Problem

When running the ws_ant.bat or schemaGen.bat command in WebSphere Application Server V7.0 on Windows, it will immediately end and show the error "setupCmdLine.bat was unexpected at this time". There might be some additional information in front of this error message. This occurs when the product is installed in a directory containing parenthesis characters, such as "Program Files (x86)".

Symptom

The ws_ant.bat script command serves a variety of purposes, such as processing ANT scripts in WebSphere Application Server V7.0. This script command can be invoked manually at a command prompt, and other utilities or products can invoke this script.

The schemagen.bat tool generates an XML schema using Java Architecture for XML Binding.

The error described in this technote occurs immediately after invoking one of these scripts in WebSphere Application Server V7.0 on Windows. The command will immediately terminate and produces an error message which looks like this:

<product_path>\setupCmdLine.bat was unexpected at this time

The <product_path> indicates part of the path in which the product is installed. For example, the error commonly looks like this:

IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\bin\setupCmdLine.bat was unexpected at this time

This error occurs when the product is installed into a path which contains parenthesis characters. For example, this would occur if the product is installed into the "Program Files (x86)" directory.
