Summary
On Windows operating systems, a WebSphere service can be run in the security context of a local user account, a domain user account, or the LocalSystem account. The WebSphere services are controlled by a local user or a domain user. There are advantages when the WebSphere services are configured to run as a domain user instead of a local user account. For example, multiple machines configured with IBM WebSphere Application Server as a service can be controlled by a specific domain user account. If the password is changed, only the domain controller for that user must be modified. If local system users are configured to run the services, the password must be changed in every machine. If the password changes for a local user, the passwords on the Windows services must also be modified.
The task of setting up WebSphere Application Server to run, as a Windows service under a domain user account, can be complicated. This article explains the general information required to accomplish the setup in Windows Server. You learn how to create the Windows service by using the wasservicehelper utility and how to change the service to log on as the domain user account.
