Running APL2/PC Version 1.02 under Windows

Troubleshooting

Problem

APL characters may not display properly, and APL232 may abend, when running APL2/PC in a DOS sesssion under Windows.

Resolving The Problem

APL2/PC was not designed for, and is not officially supported under any version of Windows (3.1, 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP or Vista).

APL2/PC may run under Windows subject to the following limits:

ED3 does not run with APL232.

Function EDIT2 in workspace EDIT does not work. (Function EDIT does work.)

PROFIL32 workspace makes APL232 abend. Therefore, the default RUN.BAT file we ship, if used as is, causes APL232 to abend. To fix PROFIL32:
    Invoke APL232 without running PROFIL32
    )COPY PROFIL32
Edit the function and comment out the last two lines.
    )SAVE PROFIL32

The APL2 character set does not display properly in a DOS window. The APL2 character set may work in a DOS fullscreen session under Windows. After opening the DOS window, you can use Alt-Enter to switch to a fullscreen session.

Notes:
APL2FONT does not work on some hardware in SVGA mode. In particular, it does not work on portable machines like the Thinkpad. However, APL2FONT /S (the small 43-line font) may work on some machines where the regular 25-line font does not.
If APL2FONT does not work on your machine, you can use the Alt-F4, Alt-F6, and Alt-F8 key combinations to switch to graphics display modes that support APL characters.

Any usage of QuadPK ("peek" and "poke") is unlikely to work. This includes usages by APE and AGSS.

Program PFORTPAR.EXE abends under Windows 95 only (not 3.1, not NT). This prevents calling FORTRAN routines.
