Restoring the Windows System State from a VMware snapshot

Question & Answer

Question

Is it possibe to restore the Windows system state from a VMware virtual machine snapshot?

Cause

The Windows system has crashed and the system state needs to be restored.

Answer

Restoring the Windows system state from a VMware snapshot is not possible. While the system state consists of many files on the file system, it also consists of the registry. There are many steps needed to restore the system state successfully to a new machine that are not possible when restoring flat files from a VMware snapshot.
