Resolving a City Using the Postal Code

Question & Answer

Question

Resolving a City Using the Postal Code

Answer

Resolving a City Using the Postal Code

About this task

Many U.S. cities have more than one postal code. However Sterling TMS stores onlyone postal code for each city. If you enter a different postal codefor your location the system will not return the city in your searchresults.

As a result you might want to leave the postal codeblank in your search criteria on the Resolve a City page. Sterling TMS will returnthe city with the default postal code and you can enter the real postalcode on the Add Location page.

The followingworkflow shows how this process works for a location in Eden PrairieMinnesota. The postal code of the location is 55347 but the defaultpostal code for the city is 55343.

Procedure

  1. On the Resolve a City page define your search fields:
    • Set the City to Eden Prairie.
    • Set the State to Minnesota.
    • Set the Postal Code to 55347.
  2. Click Resolve. Sterling TMS does not returnany search results because you entered 55347 asthe postal code.
  3. Remove 55347 as the PostalCode and leave this search field blank.
  4. Click Resolve. Sterling TMS displays EdenPrairie MN 55343 (USA) in the Resolved City list.
  5. Click Select to select this cityand return to the Add Location page. Sterling TMS displays 55343 asthe default postal code for this location.
  6. Change the postal code from 55343 to 55347which is the correct postal code for the location.
