Required PTFs for Upgrading to IBM i 7.2

News

Abstract

The following PTFs for V6R1Mx and V7R1M0 are required to upgrade to IBM i 7.2. Please review the Preventative Service Planning (PSP) entries for software installation to determine other PTFs you may need.

Content

Important note regarding FC 5786 or FC 5787 (TotalStorage EXP24 Disk Dwr)

PTF MF58611 is required to use disk drives in disk towers with FC 5786 or FC 5787 (TotalStorage EXP24 Disk Dwr).   In addition, these disk drives cannot be used as a load source unless you create your own distribution media containing this PTF.   If you have a drawer with FC 5786 or FC5787 and your system comes up to DST, then apply  PTF MF58611 before completing the install.  This will be included in a resave of License Internal code that is targeted for availability in early July.  Watch the resave website for availability http://www-947.ibm.com/systems/support/i/planning/resave/index.html

Upgrading using virtual media

The following PTFs must be applied if using virtual media:

MF53936 MF54034 MF59283
MF53938 MF59282 MF63879 **
MF53949
MF59281

** Required if load source is configured with VIOS 520 byte disks.  This PTF must be perm applied prior to the upgrade.

In addition, if an iASP is configured on the system being upgraded using virtual media, PERM apply the following:

If you are upgrading from V6R1M0 - MF50211

If you are upgrading from V6R1M1 - MF50918

In general, All MFxxxxx (LIC PTFs) should be perm applied prior to the upgrade.

Prepare for Install

The following Prepare for Install PTFs must be applied:

If you are upgrading from: PTFs If you are upgrading from: PTFs
V6R1Mx SI42213 V7R1M0 SI67578
SI65147 SI52927
SI51661 SI52990
SI52932 SI65908

When using the "Work with Licensed Programs for Target Release" option during Prepare for Install, please ensure 5770TS1 *BASE and option 1 have been selected.   5770TS1 will be automatically installed on every upgrade and if it's not selected you won't be able to accept the software agreements, which would cause a 5770TS1 install failure during the upgrade.

Upgrading using network file system

The following PTFs must be applied if you are upgrading from virtual optical storage on a Network File System (NFS) server:

If you are upgrading from: PTFs If you are upgrading from: PTFs If you are upgrading from: PTFs
V6R1M0 SI65147 V6R1M1 SI65147 V7R1M0 SI67578

MF47285
MF46292

For information on how to upgrade from virtual optical storage using the Network File System including client ethernet adapter considerations, please refer to the following PDF link URL:

Load source and additional LIC space requirements

IBM i 7.2 requires a new minimum load source size.  There is also a requirement to allocate additional space for the Licensed Internal Code (LIC) prior to upgrading.
Refer to the Memo to users for information regarding the new load source size:

http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_72/rzahg/rzahgmtu.htm

The following PTFs are required prior to allocating the additional required LIC space:
If you are upgrading from: PTFs If you are upgrading from: PTFs If you are upgrading from: PTFs
V6R1M0 SI51661 V6R1M1 SI51661 V7R1M0 MF59277 *
MF59327 * MF59328 *

* When upgrading to IBM i 7.2 TR1 or later, these PTFs will allow you to not have to stop RAID first.

Ensure additional LIC space has been allocated prior to upgrading to IBM i 7.2.  There are two ways that this can be done:

  1. Use GO LICPGM and take option 5 to Prepare for Install.   On the Prepare for Install menu take the option to Allocate additional space for LIC.
  2. Use the QLPALCSP API.  For information on the QLPALCSP API, please refer to www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_72/apis/qlpalcsp.htm
Note:  An IPL is required to actually allocate the additional LIC space.  Once the IPL has been completed, Try to allocate the additional LIC space again and ensure that allocating additional LIC space is no longer necessary.  At this point you can continue with the upgrade.

Changing primary language during upgrade

If upgrading using IBM supplied media, using the automatic install process, and changing your primary language, the following PTFs must be applied to allow you to set the install language:

If you are upgrading from: PTFs If you are upgrading from: PTFs
V6R1Mx SI38035 V7R1M0 SI44486

After you have loaded and applied the PTF, type the following - CALL QINSTLNG ('29xx'), where 29xx is the NLV of your new primary language.

Electronic Software Delivery (ESD)

If using the Electronic Software Delivery (ESD) process along with image catalogs to upgrade, there is an API called QVOIFIMG that will allow you to add all
files within the image catalog directory to the image catalog automatically. The following PTFs are required when using QVOIFIMG:
If you are upgrading from: PTFs If you are upgrading from: PTFs If you are upgrading from: PTFs
V6R1Mx SI65147 V7R1M0 SI67578 V7R2M0 SI67589

Avoiding database cross reference file errors

The following database PTFs are needed to avoid a database cross reference file error condition during the upgrade to 7.2:
If you are upgrading from: PTFs
V6R1Mx SI57782
SI61024

If these ptfs are not applied to the previous release prior to the upgrade, a RCLSTG SELECT(*DBXREF) may be required following the install of the operating system in order to successfully install several products that are dependent on the data in the cross reference files.
