Removing unwanted characters from strings

Troubleshooting

Problem

I am using SPSS for Windows. I have a long string with numeric values which are mixed in with other characters in various columns. How can I search a long string variable to remove extraneous characters and left justify all the remaining elements? For example "1234-67-901-3456" should become "1234679013456," and "abd./def-\ghijkl" should become "abcdefghijk." How best can this be done?
