Remote install of Microsoft Windows 2000 fails - Servers

Problem

During the remote install, Microsoft Windows will lose the remote CD and issue a text box to prompt user to insert disk of SP4 and Windows 2000 server CD into drive E. If the user presses OK, the install routine cannot find drive E. If the user presses cancel, it will appear that the installation process continues; however, after the install completes, there will be several missing files preventing the install from being used properly. This occurs every time.

Symptom

During the remote install, Microsoft Windows will lose the remote CD and issue a text box to prompt user to insert disk of SP4 and Windows 2000 server CD into drive E.

If the user press OK, the install routine cannot find drive E.

If the user press Cancel, it will appear that the installation process continues; however, after the install completes, there will be several missing files preventing the install from being used properly.

This occurs every time.

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
Solution

IBM is working on a solution to this problem currently and will be contained in RSA firmware. The target date for availability is First Quarter 2007.

Workaround

Installation of the operating system locally, instead of remotely, will succeed.

Additional information

The text box pops up because the Microsoft Windows installer loses the drive that it has been installing the operating system from. The latest RSA hardware behaves differently from the earlier cards which the installer did not lose the drive.
