Reasons Why a Printer Will Not Print

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document provides a list of reasons why a particular printer may not be printing from the IBM i operating system.

Resolving The Problem

Your printer might not be printing because of the following reasons:
  • The spooled files in the output queue are not in ready (RDY) status.
  • You might need to reply to a message to start the printer.
  • The printer might be varied off.
  • The writer was not started.
  • The writer has been held.
  • The writer has ended (possibly abnormally).

Checking the Status of a Printer Device Description:

To check the status of a printer, use the Work with Configuration Status (WRKCFGSTS) command. On the operating system command line, type the following:

WRKCFGSTS CFGTYPE(*DEV) CFGD(PRT01)

where PRT01 is the name of the printer and then press the Enter key.

Checking the Status of a Printer Writer:

To check the status of a printer writer, use the Work with Writer (WRKWTR) command. On the operating system command line, type the following:

WRKWTR WTR(PRT0*)

where PRT0* is the name of the printer with wildcard on last character, and then press the Enter key.

Alternatively, you can use just WRKWTR WTR(*PRT) to work with all printer writers that correspond to a printer device description, or you can use WRKWTR *ALL to work with all active writers that either correspond to a printer device description or a remote output queue (RMTOUTQ).

Checking the a Printer Writer Job Log:

To find a printer writer's job log, whether it is currently active or it has ended, use the Work with Job (WRKJOB) command. On the operating system command line, type the following:

WRKJOB JOB(PRT01)

where PRT01 is the name of the printer writer and then press the Enter key. If there are more than one job still on the system that corresponds to the printer writer, then it will take you to the Select Job panel where you can select (using option 1) the job you want. Once you have selected a job and have pressed the Enter key, you will be taken to the Work with Job panel where you can select Option 10 to display the job log (if the job is active or on the job queue) or Option 4 to work with spooled files (if the job has ended) and then Option 5 to display the QPJOBLOG spooled file.

If there is only one job still on the system that corresponds to that printer writer, then it will take you directly to the Work with Job panel where you can select Option 10 to display the job log (if the job is active or on the job queue) or Option 4 to work with spooled files (if the job has ended) and then Option 5 to display the QPJOBLOG spooled file.
