Problem
A Quantum customer has provided me what is called a Quantum ASCII Multipunch file. It appears to be a normal fixed ASCII file, but in some fields there are asterisks, which are supposed to represent multiple response questions. At the end of some of the lines in this file, there are a lot of odd characters. When I try to read this file into SPSS, the plain ASCII fields come in correctly, but the asterisks are either not read in at all, or all I get is an asterisk in SPSS. How can I read this file?
