Abstract

An IBM® Spectrum Protect® V8.1.8.000 server can fail to complete read operations on non IBM tape drives. The issue is indicated by error message ANR8302E with the following SCSI sense data: KEY=05, ASC=24, ASCQ=00.

Content

Who is Affected:
This problem affects non IBM tape drives in an IBM Spectrum Protect V8.1.8.000 environment. All other releases and levels are unaffected.

Problem Summary:
A failure is observed when reading data from tape volumes that are loaded in non IBM tape drives with libraries of type SCSI and VTL.

The IBM Spectrum Protect server activity log displays the ANR8302E input/output error message with SCSI sense data: KEY=05, ASC=24, ASCQ=00.

To determine whether this issue affects your system environment, capture a server trace with PVR and MMS trace classes. If the issue affects your environment, the trace includes specific SCSI sense data, as shown in the following example:
ANR8302E I/O error on drive MTxx (/dev/mtxx) with volume VOLYY (OP=READ, Error Number=22, CC=207, rc = 2857, KEY= 05, ASC=24, ASCQ=00, SENSE=70.00.05.00.00.00.00.12.00.00.00.00.24.00.00.C0.00.01.00.00.00.00.00.00.10.02.,Description=Device is not in a state capable of performing request).
After the IBM Spectrum Protect server has been upgraded to V8.1.8.000, the following error appears during each attempt to access a tape drive and read data from a volume:
ANR8302E I/O error on drive MTxx (/dev/mtxx) with volume VOLYY (OP=READ, Error Number=22, CC=207, rc = 2857, KEY= 05, ASC=24, ASCQ=00, SENSE=70.00.05.00.00.00.00.12.00.00.00.00.24.00.00.C0.00.01.00.00.00.00.00.00.10.02.,Description=Device is not in a state capable of performing request).
ANR8335E I/O error reading label for volume VOLYY in drive MTxx
This issue affects only non IBM tape drives that were defined with an IBM Spectrum Protect device driver.
Versions Affected:
IBM Spectrum Protect V8.1.8.000 servers on all supported platforms.
For the V8.1.8.000 release, there is no workaround for improving the mount performance.

Problem Resolution:

Apply the cumulative fixing level 8.1.8.001 or later. This problem is projected to be resolved in server levels 8.1.8.100 and 8.1.9.000, and later with APAR IT29708. This is subject to change at the sole discretion of IBM.
