RAID settings not set by configuration patterns if node is powered off - IBM Flex system

Troubleshooting

Problem

When using Lenovo XClarity Administrator Configuration Patterns to apply RAID configuration settings to a managed system, the settings will not be applied unless the system is powered on when the pattern is applied. If the pattern is applied with the power off, the application will give the user an error message stating that the pattern's settings were not successfully applied. (where RAID = Redundant Array of Independent Disks)

Symptom

When using Lenovo XClarity Administrator Configuration Patterns to apply RAID configuration settings to a managed system, the settings will not be applied unless the system is powered on when the pattern is applied.

If the pattern is applied with the power off, the application will give the user an error message stating that the pattern's settings were not successfully applied.

(where RAID = Redundant Array of Independent Disks)

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • Flex System x220 Compute Node, type 2585, any model
  • Flex System x220 Compute Node, type 7864, any model
  • Flex System x220 Compute Node, type 7906, any model
  • Flex System x240 Compute Node, type 7863, any model
  • Flex System x240 Compute Node, type 7863 E5-xxxxV2, any model
  • Flex System x240 Compute Node, type 8737, any model
  • Flex System x240 Compute Node, type 8737 E5-xxxxV2, any model
  • Flex System x240 Compute Node, type 8738, any model
  • Flex System x240 Compute Node, type 8956, any model
  • Flex System x280 X6 Compute Node, type 4259, any model
  • Flex System x280 X6 Compute Node, type 7903 , any model
  • Flex System x440 Compute Node, type 2584, any model
  • Flex System x440 Compute Node, type 7917, any model
  • Flex System x480 Compute Node, type 4258, any model, any 4258/x480
  • Flex System x480 X6 Compute Node, type 4259, any model
  • Flex System x480 X6 Compute Node, type 7903 , any model
  • Flex System x880 X6 Compute Node, type 4259, any model
  • Flex System x880 X6 Compute Node, type 7903 , any model

The system is configured with at least one of the following:

  • Lenovo XClarity Administrator, 1.0.0

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:

  • ServeRAID M1210e, any model
  • ServeRAID M1215 SAS/SATA Controller for IBM System x, Option part number 46C9114, any model
  • ServeRAID M5016 SAS/SATA Controller for IBM System x, Option part number 90Y4304, any Replacement part number(CRU)
  • ServeRAID M5110 SAS/SATA Controller Card, Option part number 81Y4481, any Replacement part number(CRU)
  • ServeRAID M5110 SAS/SATA Controller for IBM System x (CTO), any replacement part number
  • ServeRAID M5110e SAS/SATA Controller for IBM System x, onboard, any embedded
  • ServeRAID M5115 SAS/SATA Controller, Option part number 90Y4390, any Replacement part number(CRU)
  • ServeRAID M5120 SAS/SATA Controller for IBM System x, Option part number 81Y4478, any Replacement part number(CRU)
  • ServeRAID M5210 SAS/SATA Controller for IBM System x, Option part number 46C9110, any any
  • ServeRAID M5210e SAS/SATA Controller for IBM System x, Option part number 46C9117CTO, any any

The following system firmware level(s) are affected: All levels of IMM2 firmware are affected.

Note: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software.

Please see the compatibility page for more information: http://www.ibm.com/systems/info/x86servers/serverproven/compat/us/

Solution

This behavior is corrected in the v1.0.1 release of Lenovo XClarity Administrator.

The file is available at the following URL:

Workaround

To correctly apply settings, power on the server prior to applying the configuration pattern. Re-applying the pattern after powering on the server is supported.

Additional information

The root cause of this is in the writing of RAID configuration data, which requires the RAID card to have active power at the time of configuration changes. The IMM2 Firmware implementation does not recognize this prerequisite and sends the configuration commands to the powered-off card, which results in them not being properly acted upon. An error is returned to the configuration patterns code indicating the configuration was not properly written.
