QUERY ACTLOG does not return output

Troubleshooting


Problem

The QUERY ACTLOG administrative command is run on a Tivoli Storage Manager server. The command returns no output or is slow to return output.

Diagnosing The Problem

In this case, the activity log was filled with ANR9999D messages as a result of apar IC85543. The activity log retention period was also such that the activity log size was very large. Run the QUERY STATUS administrative command to verify the size of the activity log. For example :

tsm: MYTSM_SERVER1>q status
...
Activity Log Retention: 400 Day(s)
Activity Log Number of Records: 1016268397
Activity Log Size: 29,470 M

In this example, the activity log size occupies about 29 GB of space in the database.

Resolving The Problem

Reduce the size of the activity log using the SET ACTLOGRETENTION administrative command. For example :

set actlogretention 30

In this example, the activity log retention will be reduced from 400 days to 30 days.
