QMGTOOLS: Work with RTVDSKINF Data (WRKDSKINF)

How To

Summary

The Work with RTVDSKINF Data (WRKDSKINF) tool lists data files created using RTVDSKINF and provides options for: displaying information about each collection, generating reports using the PRTDSKINF command, starting new collections, copy, delete, rename and even compare two collections. NOTE: This tool only finds collection files with "RTVDSKINF" in the text description.

Steps

If you don't already have the IBM i Support MustGather tools installed, or it's not up to date, please see the following document for install and update instructions - https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/645929
The Work with Retrieved Disk Information tool can be initiated from the Must Gather Data Collector menu -
GO QMGTOOLS/MG  =>  Internals  =>  Storage Management Menu  => Permanent Storage Menu => Work with RTVDSKINF collections
You can also access the tool directly - QMGTOOLS/WRKDSKINF
The Work with Retrieved Disk Information tool screen looks like this:

Total storage used by collections:  This is the total size of all the RTVDSKINF files listed in the table.
Options:
  • Copy:  Use this option to duplicate the collection file to a different name in the same library, or copy to a different library with either the same file name or a different file name.  This options saves the file to a save file in library QTEMP and restores it to the target library and with the specified object name, so the file attributes are preserved.

  • Delete:  Use this option to delete the specified RTVDSKINF collection.  When you choose this option and press the Enter key, the Confirm Delete of RTVDSKINF Collection Data display is shown.  This display allows you to confirm the deletion before any files are deleted.  NOTE:  QUSRSYS/QAEZDISK is the file RTVDSKINF uses for a new collection.  If the file exists (e.g. prior collection), the data is overwritten with the new data collection.  This file contains the most recent collection data.

  • Display details:  Shows details about the collection, such as - system information, storage size, storage used, collection total, etc.  Note:  V7R4 and later will also show the end date and time of the collection, and calculate how long the collection ran.

  • Create report:  Use this option to run the PRTDSKINF command to generate a report from the selected collection data.
    image-20250828150436-8
  • Rename:  Changes the name of the collection file by using the Rename Object (RNMOBJ) command. image-20250828150619-9
  • Compare:  Use this option to compare two collection files.  Select two files from the list that you want compared using the QMGTOOLS/CMPDISK tool.  The older collection will be compared to the newer collection and a difference report will be generated, showing which objects grew the most.
Collections:
  • Date:  Date when the collection was started
  • Time:  Time of day when the collection was started
  • Library:  Library where the collection file resides.  RTVDSKINF uses library QUSERSYS
  • File:  Name of the collection file.  If the information was retrieved from the system and basic ASPs, RTVDSKINF will store the data in file QAEZDISK.  If the information was retrieved from an independent ASP device, the collected information will be stored in file QAEZDnnnnn, where 'nnnnn' is the ASP number of the independent ASP.
  • Collection file size:  Size of the collection file in bytes.
  • ASP:  Shows SYSBAS if the data was collected from the system Auxiliary Storage Pool and basic ASPs, otherwise will show the ASP number if collected from an independent ASP device.
  • Rel:  Release level of the collection data file.  This should typically represent the release level of the system at the time of data collection.
  • System:  Name of system retrieved by the data collection.  This could be different from the current system name if the name of the system was changed since the time of the collection, or if the data file was moved from a different system.
  • Type/mod:  Name of system retrieved by the data collection.  This could be different from the current system name if the name of the system was changed since the time of the collection, or if the data file was moved from a different system.
  • Serial:  Machine serial number retrieved by the data collection.  This could be different from the current value if the system was upgraded after the time of the collection, or if the data file was moved from a different system.
Function Keys:
  • F3/F12:  Exit the WRKDSKINF tool back to the prior menu or command line
  • F5:  Refresh the list of collections.  This is useful after copying, or renaming a collection.
  • F6:  Start new collection.  This allows you to submit RTVDSKINF using the same interface as option 1 from the DISKTASKS menu.
    image-20250828151259-10
  • F9:  Shows all spooled reports created by PRTDSKINF and QMGTOOLS/CMPDISK.
  • F11: Change view to show either - System, Type/mod, Serial  or Collection file size, ASP, Rel.
