Troubleshooting
Problem
This document describes the License Managment Menu and options associated with it.
Resolving The Problem
Installing QMGTOOLS
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas8N1011297
To access License Management menu, go to the MG menu via GO QMGTOOLS/MG command. From there, choose menu option for the Internals menu.
The License Management Menu is located in the Internals menu.
The License Management menu looks like this. Descriptions will follow after the sample screen shot.
Note: You can also reach the License menu directly by running - GO QMGTOOLS/LICENSE.
Licensing SYSSNAP collection
This option can be used to collect data for upload to IBM that is useful in diagnosing license key management issues. It can also be run from the command line using either QMGTOOLS/INTSNAP TYPE(*LICENSE) or QMGTOOLS/LICKEYSNAP. Data collected includes:
- History log
- DSPLICKEY
- WRKLICINF
- Licensed Internal Code log
- License Management trace data (if it exists)
- etc.
Be sure to set the date range correctly so it corresponds to the observed licensing issue.
Specify either the number of previous days to collect, or use *DATE to specify a specific date range.
After specifying an appropriate date range that covers the license key issue, you can set the other parameters as recommended by your IBM i Software Support team, otherwise just press Enter to accept the defaults.
After the collection is complete, the data will be compressed and written to a file IFS directory /tmp/. You will then be prompted to upload the data to IBM.
Be sure to fill in the IBM case number (TSxxxxxxxxx), then:
- If you previously stored your credentials (https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/qmgtools-store-ftp2ibmcmd-credentials), press enter to start the upload.
- If you do not have stored credentials, enter either your BlueDiamond or IBM Transfer ID (https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/qmgtools-create-transfer-id-upload-data-ibm) credentials and press Enter to start the upload.
After the upload has been submitted, the FTP Status Screen will be displayed, where you can monitor the upload status.
Display license information
Product licensing information is displayed for the current system. This tool can also be run from the command line using QMGTOOLS/DSPLICINF.
Sample report:
Processor licensing
This option generates a report which lists processor licensing and configuration information. It can also be run from the command line using QMGTOOLS/DSPPRCLIC.
Sample report:
Check history log for licensing messages
This option runs the QMGTOOLS/SCNQHST MESSAGES(*LICENSE) command to display license related message in the history log based on the selected date range. The OUTPUT(*PRINT) option will spool the entries including second level help text details.
See document https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/6563049 for further details on the SCNQHST command.
License keys that will expire soon
This option displays a list of product licenses which will expire within the specified number of days, or have already expired. It can also be run from the command line using QMGTOOLS/DSPEXPKEY.
Installed products missing license key
This option displays a list of installed *KEYED products that are missing their license key. This tool can also be run from the command line using QMGTOOLS/MISSINGKEY.
Check PowerVS/Cloud license injection
This option is for IBM i partitions managed by PowerVS running in the cloud. It can also be run from the command line using QMGTOOLS/CHKKEYINJ. This tool checks the following:
- Status of required fixes for known key injection issues.
- Whether or not license key injection has successfully completed. Note: The injection log is cleared during IPL, so it's important to check after an injection attempt and before IPLing.
- If keys have not been successfully injected, then it will also display a list of the most recent IPLs. The IPL list shows the times when the system was down, in order to determine if the system was down when injection was attempted.
Sample report:
License Management trace
This option should be used under the direction of IBM i Software Support. It allows starting and stopping of License Management function tracing, plus an option to upload the trace data to IBM.
Note: Trace data is also included when sending data to IBM using the Licensing SYSSNAP collection (LICKEYSNAP) option.
