APAR Error Description / Circumvention
-----------------------------------------------
Customer is running ESX 4.0 U1. He has a D/T3550 M2 with 32 GB
of memory, and a single quad core processor 2.8 GHZ. He has 750
GB nwsstg linked to the server and is running virtual machines
in ESX on the nwsstg. He has a duel port Qlogic card which was
running MPIO but has since removed an nwsh from the multipath
group and changed to use a single nwsh. When the attempts to
deploy a template that is about 1 GB and expands to 20 GB for
the virtual machine. Virtual machine contains Ubuntu, but has
attempted to deploy windows images as well. This action always
causes the HBA or HBA's (when using mpio) to fail immediately
with 573BB300 or 573BA6D9. Both HBA's and the planer in the IBM
i have been replaced without changing the result. Initial
hardware investigation indicated that the adapter may not be
handling an unexpected large write that is outside of its
maximum burst parameters, but it is still being investigated.
VMware support was contacted by the customer but they have so
far seen no issues.
CORRECTION FOR APAR MA40589 :
-----------------------------
There was a problem in the iSCSI adapter driver that caused
large (> 2MB) SCSI write transfers to fail the adapter. When
large ESX storage spaces (> 512 GB) are created the block size
must be set to 4MB or 8MB, which results in the large SCSI
writes. The driver can now handle the large transfers without
issue.
