Question & Answer
Question
What is the proper method for configuring "friendly" URL names in IBM WebSphere Portal and then accessing the target pages using these friendly URL names?
Answer
When setting up a friendly URL name via the Page Properties portlet for a target page, it is a requirement that you create a friendly name for each page/label in the target page's hierarchy under the Content Root, and include the entire hierarchy in your URL address in the browser when accessing the target page.
In other words, if you want to set up a friendly URL name for "Page1a" and your page hierarchy in Manage Pages consists of Content Root ->Home->Page1->Page1a, you must do the following:
-- Define a friendly URL name for Home, Page1, and Page1a.
-- Access the page via your browser by using the URL, http://
It is insufficient to:
-- Only create a friendly URL name for Page1a without also creating a friendly URL name for Home and Page1
-- Access Page1a using the URLs, http://
NOTE: Be aware that it is not supported that a URL mapping and a friendly URL name have the identical name for a particular page, as noted in Document #1366506, "Can a URL mapping and friendly URL contain the same name?" Because WebSphere Portal installations have a URL mapping set up for "Home" by default, remove this URL mapping if you want to create a friendly URL name of "Home" for the same target page.
