Symptom
This RETAIN tip provides information on how to properly install and remove any Dual In-Line Memory Module (DIMM).
Affected configurations
The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:
- Any IBM supported memory DIMM
This tip is not hardware specific.
This tip is not software specific.
Additional information
Note: Always use an electrostatic-discharge (ESD) wrist strap or other grounding system when you work inside the server.
There are two common type DIMM connectors on the System x servers and Blade servers. The following picture shows the two types of connectors:

Figure 1 illustrates a DIMM connector aligned at a 90 degree angle.

Figure 2 illustrates a DIMM connector aligned at approximately a 45 degree angle.
The instructions below apply to both types of connectors.
Installing a memory DIMM
- Observe the DIMM slot retaining clips to be in the open position prior to inserting DIMMs.
- Touch the static-protective package that contains the DIMM to any unpainted metal surface on the outside of the server. Then, remove the DIMM from the package. Do not touch components and any part of the gold tabs on the DIMM. Do not bend or flex the DIMM.
- Turn the DIMM so that the DIMM keys align correctly with the slot.
- Insert the DIMM into the connector by aligning the edges of the DIMM with the slots at the ends of the DIMM connector. Firmly press the DIMM straight into the connector by simultaneously applying pressure on both ends of the DIMM noted by Arrow 1 and Arrow 2 in the picture (do not install the DIMM by inserting one end into the DIMM socket first, then the other end. Installing DIMMs in this motion can damage the DIMM connector). The retaining clips snap into the locked position when the DIMM is firmly seated in the connector.
- Observe the retaining clips have snapped closed completely.
Note: If there is a gap between the DIMM and the retaining clips, the DIMM is not fully seated. Manually attempt to close the retaining clip. If unable to manually close the retaining clip, open the retaining clips, remove the DIMM, and repeat steps 3 thru 5.
Removing a memory DIMM
Note: Always use an ESD wrist strap or other grounding system when you work inside the server.
- To avoid breaking the DIMM retaining clips or damaging the DIMM connectors, open the clips gently.
- Carefully lift the DIMM out of the DIMM socket by holding the edge of both ends of the DIMM.
- Place the DIMM on an ESD protected surface, or in the original package to prevent possible damage to the DIMM.
