Problem

Re-reporting of Service Events after an HMC install or upgrade

Symptom

After an install or upgrade of the HMC, old events call home to IBM.

Cause

The HMC maintains a history of the Service Event records for the managed systems for FSP and BMC systems.  When the HMC is reinstalled without restoring a backup or the HMC is upgraded to a new version, the history will be lost.  This can cause old events to be re-reported to IBM through call home.

Diagnosing The Problem

After install or upgrade, the HMC calls home with new events for old errors for managed systems or for itself. Examples: (FQPSPxxxxxxx) Events  and  System Events .

Resolving The Problem

Resolve and then close all service events on the HMC prior to  reinstalling or upgrading the HMC.
List all Open Service Events:

lssvcevents -t hardware --filter status=open

Resolve the Open Events, then close them:

chsvcevent -o closeall

For the 7063 BMC events or BMC managed systems, clear the sel list prior to upgrade or re-install to prevent re-reporting of old events in the BMC:

Procedure for BMC systems:

Petitboot Menu:

  1. Power on your server using the power button on the front of your system. Your system will power on to the Petitboot bootloader menu. This process takes about 1 - 2 minutes to complete. Do not walk away from your system! When Petitboot loads, your monitor will become active and you will need to push any key in order to interrupt the boot process.
  2. At the Petitboot bootloader main menu, select Exit to Shell.
  3. Run: ipmitool sel list
  4. Run: ipmitool sel clear
  5. Verify the list is cleared: ipmitool sel list
From another system on the network with ipmitool installed:
ipmitool -I lanplus -H <IPADDR> -U ADMIN -P ADMIN sel list
ipmitool -I lanplus -H <IPADDR> -U ADMIN -P ADMIN sel clear
ipmitool -I lanplus -H <IPADDR> -U ADMIN -P ADMIN sel list
Proceed with installing or upgrading the HMC.
