POST 199 error "Processor technology mismatch detected" - Servers

Troubleshooting

Problem

After adding a second processor: You receive the 199 POST error message and you are forced into setup. CPUID 1 is F27 and CPUID 2 is F24. Processors function properly when installed one at a time.

Resolving The Problem

Source

RETAIN tip: H176860

Symptom

After adding a second processor:

  • You receive the 199 POST error message and you are forced into setup. CPUID 1 is F27 and CPUID 2 is F24
  • Processors function properly when installed one at a time
Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eServer systems:

  • an IBM eServer xSeries 345, type 8670, any model
  • an IBM eServer xSeries 336, type 8837, any model
  • an IBM eServer xSeries 335, type 8676, any model
  • an IBM eServer xSeries 235, type 8671, any model

The microprocessors are at different stepping levels. The CPU with the higher stepping level is in socket 2 (CPU2).

Solution
  1. Remove the microprocessor in location CPU2 (and set it aside until step 3).
  2. Move the microprocessor in location CPU1 to location CPU2.
  3. Place the microprocessor removed in step 1 (from location CPU2) into location CPU1.
Additional information

The new system BIOS checks to ensure that the lowest step processor is in the Boot Strap Processor Socket. If the processors are in the incorrect order, this error message will occur. A new BIOS will have a more informative message instructing the user to swap the processors. Newer code will also allow the user to continue POST after logging the error message.
