Problem

"POP3 PASS command failed with RC -301" error in the communication log

Symptom

Gentran:Director for Windows and/or Commerce:Mail
Using Commerce Exchange type of communication profile
Connecting to a Sterling mailbox
Unable to EDI receive data or network reports
Error in Audit Log "Communications completed unsuccessfully - see communication log for details"
Receiving Error "POP3 PASS command failed with RC -301" in the communication log when trying to receive EDI data using Gentran:Director for Windows or when trying to retrieve network reports using Commerce:Mail
Parts of this article have previously had article numbers of PRI586, PRI42979 (SCI30973) 
(NOTE:  There is a very similar error "POP3 STAT command failed with RC -301" that exists. The only difference is the word "STAT" where this error uses "PASS". That error has a different cause and solution. Please see article NFX10343 for it.)

Error Message


Near the beginning of the receive portion of  a Communication Log, you should always see the following two lines:  "Opening POP3 Session on port 110 with host ......"  and "Attempting logon to POP3 server". In this instance, the next line will read "POP3 PASS command failed with RC -301". At the end of the receive portion of the Communication Log, you will see "GenMail exiting RetrieveEDIData with RC = -301".  (NOTE: if a send is attempted, it will be at the top of the log, The very first line in the receive portion will read "GenMail retrieving EDIData.....")
