Planning Carrier Types

Answer

Planning Carrier Types

Procedure

Use the following process to set up and use carrier types:

  1. For each shipping lane develop your tendering plan:
    • Which carriers do you want to use?
    • Is each carrier a primary secondary or backup carrier for thislane?
  2. Define a contract with each carrier that includes thisshipping lane.
  3. Define a Route Guide rule which controls the tenderingprocess for this shipping lane. Set the Carrier SelectionType to one of the following options:
    • Primary
    • Primary and Secondary
    • All
    • Secondary
    • Secondary and Backup
    • Backup
  4. Define a route guide parameter for each carrier that supportsthis shipping lane:
    • Open the Route Guide Parameters page in Step 7 of Shipper Configuration.
    • On the Carrier Rank and Type tab add aseparate route guide parameter entry for each carrier that you usein this lane.
    • Specify whether the carrier is a primary secondary or backupcarrier in this lane.
  5. Open Execution and click Options. On the Shipments tab of the Options page youcan limit which carrier types you want to see on the Carrier Selectionpage. By default Sterling TMS onlydisplays primary carriers.

For example you might specifythat you want to tender shipments to primary and secondary carriers. Sterling TMS will neverdisplay backup carriers on the Carrier Selection page.

  6. When you tender a shipment in Execution the Carrier Selectionpage displays the carriers that are eligible to take this shipment. Sterling TMS displays thecarriers based on the following settings:
    • The tendering criteria you defined for the Route Guide rule. Forexample you only tender shipments to primary carriers in the shippinglane that covers this shipment.
    • The route guide parameters you defined which show whether a carrieris a primary secondary or backup carrier in the shipping lane.
    • The carrier types you selected on the Options page in Step 5.
  7. You can override the carrier types defined in the RouteGuide rule for a single shipment. Click Tender Options onthe Carrier Selection page and select the carrier types to includein the tender.

    For example:

    • Based on the Route Guide rule only primary carriers are displayedon the Carrier Selection page.
    • You do not want to tender the shipment to any of these carriers. On the Tender Options page you specify that you want to see secondarycarriers that are eligible to deliver the shipment. You select oneof the secondary carriers and submit the tender.
