Question & Answer
Question
Can a PESH password be requested?
Answer
The Hardware Management Console (HMC) is a system management appliance. For the purposes of stability and security, the HMC is a closed system; no other software can be loaded on it. The HMC has a restricted shell and offers alternative commands to achieve functions that are normally in regular operating environments, such as sendfile instead of FTP. The command FTP is not available in the restricted shell.
In some instances, access outside the restricted shell is needed when directed by IBM Support or IBM Product Engineering. The command pesh is the method to access the Product Engineering shell on the HMC for troubleshooting or accomplishing workarounds before fixes are made available for certain issues.
The pesh command is not intended to hack the restricted shell or run commands as root that are not available in the restricted shell when HMC alternatives are available. Access with the pesh command is not needed to collect or send pedbg, only hscpe access.
Obtain the pesh password by opening a ticket for the HMC serial number from IBM Support. A justified and legitimate reason must be provided upon request, otherwise the request is denied. Instructions for how to use pesh, including commands and procedures, will be provided under IBM Support direction.
