Performing a Manual IPL

Troubleshooting

Problem

This note briefly explains how to do a manual IPL of an IBM System i system.

Resolving The Problem

To perform a manual IPL, do the following:

1.

Use the control panel of your system unit to place your system in Manual mode. You do this differently, depending on the type of system unit that you have. Do the following:

a Use the control panel to place the system unit in Manual mode. On some system units, you may need to use a key or a keystick to do this.

b Select function 02 (IPL) on the control panel, and press the Enter key. The display shows the IPL source (A, B, or D) and the mode (M or N). If the mode is N (Normal), use the toggle key to change the mode to M (Manual).
2. If your system is running, use the Power Down System command. On the operating system command line, type the following:

PWRDWNSYS OPTION(*CNTRLD) DELAY(600) RESTART(*YES)

Press the Enter key.
Notes:
1. Specifying a controlled shutdown is recommended to allow jobs to finish. The delay (specified in seconds) should be long enough for activity on your system to stop.

If the system is powered off, power it on. If the system has the attention light on (halted), perform a delayed power off. Then, press the Enter key on the control panel.
2. In the case of the system attention light being on, never use front panel function 03 to start an IPL. It can often cause errors to occur during the IPL and may also result in not all the standard manual IPL screens being shown. Open data queues can be damaged by using function 03 IPL to recover when the system is hung or halted with an SRC on the panel. In all cases, ensure the power to the console is active.
