Choosing the appropriate performance data collector
- Use Collection Services as the starting point for most system-wide performance investigations. Collection Services is the primary collector of system and job-level performance data and can be used to review CPU, memory pools, disk, and communications activity over time.
- Use IBM i Job Watcher when the investigation requires detailed job, thread, or task-level information. IBM i Job Watcher can collect call stacks, SQL statements, objects being waited on, Java JVM statistics, wait statistics, and other data used to diagnose job-related performance problems.
- Use IBM i Disk Watcher when the investigation is focused on disk-related performance problems.
- Use Performance Explorer when detailed trace-level information is required for a specific application, program, or system resource. Performance Explorer can be used for detailed traces and reports when deeper problem isolation is required.
