Performance considerations: Microsoft® SQL Server® and IBM® DOORS® Next 7.0.x (Engineering Lifecycle Management)

News

Abstract

While IBM® Engineering Requirements Management DOORS® Next 7.0.x can scale to higher levels of data and concurrent users than 6.0.x, the techniques that improve query performance with Db2® and Oracle® are not sufficient with Microsoft® SQL Server®. Our analysis of the issue is on-going.

In IBM® Engineering Requirements Management DOORS® Next 7.0.x, the new architecture improves application performance but introduced significant demands on the relational database and can be sensitive to a database's ability to optimize queries. Without proper optimization, some queries can significantly impact system performance.  We found that the techniques that improve query performance with Db2® and Oracle® are not sufficient with Microsoft® SQL Server®.
Our analysis of these issues concluded that they are permanent restrictions so if you encounter these defects you should plan to migrate to one of the other supported databases.
We recommend that clients who are using IBM® DOORS® Next Generation 6.0.x with Microsoft® SQL Server® do not upgrade to ELM 7.0.x using Microsoft® SQL Server® currently.
Some IBM® DOORS® Next customers decided to migrate to IBM® Db2® or Oracle® databases before they upgraded to 7.0.x in order to achieve the performance their users require.  Limited use licenses for Db2® are included with ELM products at no extra cost. See for example:
The repotools command-line utility includes a repository export and import feature. Additionally, a faster concurrentExport and concurrentImport feature was released as a technology preview in 7.0.2 and is under development as of May 2021. If you would like to register your interest in testing this faster export and import with your data so you can make use of it as soon as it is generally available, open a support case.
