Resolving The Problem

Source
RETAIN tip H201353

Symptom
Suddenly the PCI Token-Ring Adapter stops functioning. This most likely will occur after a cold boot, but might also happen during normal operation. Diagnostics will also fail, indicating that adapter initialization has failed. The adapter LED's will indicate the following:
Yellow: On solid
Green: Off

Affected configurations
The system is any of the following IBM Netfinity servers:

  • a Netfinity 5500-M20 server, Type 8662, any Model.
  • a Netfinity 5500-M10 server, Type 8661, any Model.
  • a Netfinity 5500 server, Type 8660, any Model.

The system is configured with one of the following option(s):
  • an IBM Token-Ring PCI Adapter, Option p/n's 41H8900, 75H9800, 75H9802, 85H3410, 86H1897, 85H3409, 85H3412, 85H3414 or 75H9806; FRU p/n's 41H8874, 08L3334 or 86H1896.
  • an IBM 16/4 Token-Ring PCI Adapter 2 with Wake on LAN, Option p/n's 34L0701, 34L0710 or 31L3266; FRU p/n30L6817.
  • an IBM High-Speed 100/16/4 Token-Ring PCI Adapter, Option p/n's 34L0501 or 34L0510; FRU p/n30L5980.

NOTE: No other IBM PCI Token-Ring Adapters are affected.

The system's diagnostics fail.

The microcode Firmware for the PCI Token-Ring Adapter is affected.

The system has the described symptom.

Solution
Apply microcode flash update, PCIFLASH version 3.15 or later, to the adapter. PCIFLASH can be downloaded from the IBM Networking Hardware support Web site .
  • Select the affected adapter from the product selection pulldown.
  • Select "Downloads" from that product's main support page.
  • Expand any one of the operating system categories.
  • Look for the link for "PCI Flash Version 3.15" or later.

Details
It may be possible to recover the adapter simply by applying a microcode flash update to the adapter. Before exchanging the adapter under warranty, obtain PCIFLASH version 3.15 or later, and apply the flash update to the adapter. This should correct the problem and prevent the same problem from occurring again in the future on that adapter.
