PC Doctor SAS controller multiple loop test fails - Servers

Troubleshooting

Problem

The SAS Controller test fails while running the onboard F2 PC Doctor Diagnostics SAS controller test for multiple loops or passes on one of the affected xSeries servers. This test may also fail on a single loop intermittently. The PC Doctor Diagnostics will display the following message: --xxx-xxx-xxx-date-xx-RAID Interface: Failed (Timeout waiting for the adapter to complete command) --xxx-xxx-xxx-date-xx-RAID Interface: Failed (On system board; internal error) --xxx-xxx-xxx-date-xx-RAID Interface: Failed (Failed to setup adapter in slot) --SAS Controller ...................FAILED

Resolving The Problem

RETAIN tip: H191375

Symptom

The SAS Controller test fails while running the onboard F2 PC Doctor Diagnostics SAS controller test for multiple loops or passes on one of the following xSeries servers. This test may also fail on a single loop intermittently.

The PC Doctor Diagnostics will display the following message:

--xxx-xxx-xxx-date-xx-RAID Interface:
Failed (Timeout waiting for the adapter to complete command)

--xxx-xxx-xxx-date-xx-RAID Interface:
Failed (On system board; internal error)

--xxx-xxx-xxx-date-xx-RAID Interface:
Failed (Failed to setup adapter in slot)

--SAS Controller ...................FAILED

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • System x3400, type 7973, any model
  • System x3400, type 7974, any model
  • System x3400, type 7975, any model
  • System x3400, type 7976, any model
  • System x3500, type 7977, any model
  • System x3550, type 1913, any model
  • System x3550, type 7978, any model
  • System x3650, type 1914, any model
  • System x3650, type 7979, any model
  • System x3650T, type 7980, any model
  • System x3655, type 7985, any model
  • System x3755, type 8877, any model

This Tip is not operating system specific.

The system is configured with PC Doctor.

  • The system's PC Doctor diagnostic did complete.
  • The system's PC Doctor diagnostic fails.

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:

  • ServeRAID-8k SAS Controller, option part number 25R8064, replacement part numbe 25R8076
  • ServeRAID-8k-l SAS Controller, replacement part number 25R8079

Solution

This issue will be fixed in the next ServeRAID firmware release which is targeted for second quarter 2007.

The referenced file will be available from the "Servers - ServeRAID Software Matrix" at the following URL:

http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=psg1SERV-RAID

Workaround

Customers should rely on the built-in controller diagnostics which logs all RAID controller activity in the ServeRAID event logs.

Additional Information

The Memory Header of a page in the controller was getting invalid data when running the Local Memory Tests through the PC Doctor SAS Controller test. This test allocates a piece of memory, writes fixed patterns, and verifies it. During this process, the patterns are written across the boundaries of the allocated space, which causes this memory header to have invalid data causing the SAS controller test to fail.

The new firmware release prevents the controller memory patterns from being written across the boundaries.
