Troubleshooting
Problem
Some or all IBM i partitions list a IP Address of "Unknown" under the partition General Properties. When dual HMCs manage the server, some partitions may show an ip address on one HMC but the other HMC will show "unknown" for the same partition. The partition general properties "IP Address" field represents the RMC ip address of the partition. IBM i has limited support for RMC and unlike VIOS and AIX, it does not use RMC for PowerVM functions. It is typical for IBM i to show an unknown address. This will not impact PowerVM or any HMC functions.

Resolving The Problem
This is working as designed. The partition general properties "IP Address" field represents the RMC ip address of the partition. IBM i has limited support for RMC. For example it does not support dual HMCs (one HMC will always show unknown or inactive) nor connections w/o DNS names. This has no impact on PowerVM or other HMC functions. Unlike VIOS and AIX, IBM i does not use RMC for PowerVM functions, instead commands are passed via the HMC-FSP "private" connection.
