Pack for SAP Applications and Pack for SAP BW: Migrating jobs

Preventive Service Planning

Abstract

This technote is intended to help migrating between same Pack for SAP version systems and from a lower to a higher Pack version (upgrade). In the context of this technote “Pack” will designate one of the Pack for SAP products (Applications or BW).

Content

This technote is intended to help migrate the Pack jobs in 2 situations:

Scenario 1 - The source and target systems run on the same version of Pack for SAP

An example of this scenario is propagating jobs from Development to QA or Production environments. For a detailed discussion about the best practices , see the following article: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/data/library/techarticle/dm-1202securitydeploymentpart2/

Scenario 2 - The target system is a higher version of the Pack for SAP (upgrade scenario)

Always read the Release Notes for the specific version of Pack for SAP for upgrade instructions, which might contain the latest information when compared to this technote. In case of conflicting information, the Release Notes prevail.

Note that we are not discussing the version of InfoSphere Information Server , which is not important to the Pack for SAP process upgrade:
  • Multiple versions of Pack for SAP can work with the same InfoSphere Information Server version.
  • Pack for SAP does not share specific components with the core InfoSphere Information Server.
  • You can upgrade InfoSphere Information Server independent of upgrades to the Pack for SAP (The version of Pack for SAP can remain the same in an InfoSphere Information Server upgrade. This also retains the existing patches installed for the Pack)
  • You can upgrade the Pack for SAP independent of upgrades to InfoSphere Information Server
Also, the assumption is that the SAP Server connection does not change. Otherwise, to migrate the SAP objects between SAP systems, see the best practices article listed in the Scenario 1 description. In addition, you may need to edit the jobs to re-design/re-generate the ABAP programs, BAPI interface or IDOC structure.

Current major releases Pack for SAP Applications: 8.2, 8.1, 8.0, 7.1
Current major releases Pack for SAP BW: 4.4, 4.3.3, 4.3.2

When upgrading from one version to the next (for example from Pack for SAP Applications 7.0 to 7.1), the user has the option of in-place upgrade (check the release notes for the higher version for details). This consists of installing the newer version on top of the older one and might also require re-compiling of the jobs.

For the other situations (migration between systems running the same version of Pack for SAP or upgrading from more than one major release – for example 7.0 to 8.0) the user is strongly encouraged to complete the following migration steps:
1. Export jobs from the source system as a .dsx file. You can export both the design and executable objects. However, it is recommended to export only the design objects and compile the jobs on the target system.
2. On the target system, stop both the IDoc and BW Listeners.
3. Import jobs to the target system.
4. Copy the <installation_dir>/DSSAPConnections folder from the source system to the target system, where <installation_dir> is the installation directory of IBM InfoSphere Information Server. For example /opt/IBM/InformationServer/Server.
5. Open the DataStage Administrator for SAP and verify all defined connections.
6. Update details as required. Refer to the note about the availability of some parameters.
7. Re-compile the jobs in DS Designer.
8. Restart the IDoc and BW Listeners.
The jobs are now ready to run.
