Overview

The very affordable Remote Supervisor Adapter provides advanced, yet simplified remote system management for the IBM eServer xSeries. This new adapter is part of IBM standards-based Universal Manageability (UM) solutions, designed to make everyday systems management tasks easier and more efficient throughout the life cycle of the server. The Remote Supervisor Adapter simplifies remote management by providing around-the-clock remote access of the xSeries 220. It supports remote management independent of the server status, full remote control of hardware and operating systems, and easy-to-use Web-based management from standard Web browsers (no other software required)

This half-length, 32-bit PCI adapter contains

  • Serial port - supports system management function through a modem or null modem
  • Ethernet port - enables system management function over your LAN
  • Interconnect port - supports advanced system management interconnect to reduce modem, telephone lines or modem-concentrating requirements
  • Power connector and AC adapter - allows the xSeries 220 to be connected to an external uninterruptible power supply (UPS) or power distribution unit In large enterprises where multiple xSeries 220 servers are installed with other IBM Netfinity and xSeries servers.

Software Requirements

  • Novell NetWare 4.2, or later
  • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server 2
  • SCO Unixware 7.1.1, or later

Limitations

  • The 10/100 Ethernet port is dedicated to provide access to the Remote Supervisor Adapter and is not available to the operating system or other applications.
  • The Remote Supervisor Adapter has to be the management focal point for the Advanced System Management Interconnect. Accessing the Interconnect Network through the Remote Supervisor Adapter enables communication to the Advanced System Management processor and/or the Advanced System Management PCI Adapter.
  • E-mail alerts are not supported over the Advanced System Management 1 Interconnect (RS485) network.
  • The Remote Supervisor Adapter monitors the operating system status and can communicate through its device driver to UM Services with Netfinity Director enabled and UM Server Extensions running on the 1 managed server to initiate a graceful operating system shutdown.
  • Graceful operating system shutdown is not supported in Linux operating system environments.
  • The Remote Supervisor Adapter must be installed in slot number 2 of 1 the xSeries 220.
  • Backup/restore configuration files and remote firmware updates are only supported via Web browser.
  • Due to performance limitations of the modem and remote processor adapter interconnect connections, only text-based console redirection is supported through these remote access methods.
