Overview
- IBM continues to enhance its Ethernet adapter offerings by introducing the PRO/1000 XT Server Adapter by Intel. This new adapter features PCI-X gigabit capability over industry standard Category 5 copper cabling via an RJ-45 port.
- The PCI-X protocol is a high performance extension to the existing PCI Local Bus (32/64-bit, 33/66 Mhz). PCI-X is a 64-bit bus that runs at speeds up to 133MHz, more than doubling the maximum clock speed from 66MHz to 133 MHz. The adapter with PCI-X technology provides increased bandwidth and bus performance needed to address I/O demands from enterprise applications including Gigabit Ethernet.
- The adapter allows for auto speed configuration to 10, 100 or 1000Mbps. This product supports adapter failover, load balancing, link aggregation, packet prioritization, and IP security, offering uninterrupted network performance, optimized network throughput and quality of service data delivery with security, confidentiality and authenticity for IP traffic. The adapter comes with device drivers for operation with Microsoft Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0, Novell NetWare, SCO Unixware, and Linux. It also includes:
- Intel PROSet Utility for easy setup
- DOS and Windows diagnostic program
- LEDs for visual indication of network speed and link status
- Enhanced server functions include adapter fault tolerance, which helps the server maintain network connectivity and service (even if there is a cable or adapter failure) by automatically transferring data from the failed adapter to an alternate adapter. The adapter eases IT administration and helps reduce support needs with advanced management capabilities, such as:
-
- Wired for Management (WfM) 2.0 support including Wake on LAN (full function expected late in fourth quarter of 2001, with device driver update)
- Desktop Management Interface (DMI) 2.0
- Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) 1.x support
- Load balancing / link aggregation, multiple VLAN, packet prioritization and Active PCI (Hot Plug)
- Compliant with 802.3z, 802.3ab, 802.3u,802.3, 802.1Q, 802.3ac, 802.1p, 802.3ad, 802.3p, 802.3x, PCI-X 1.0, PCI 2.2, PXE 2.0, PXE 2.1
- The PRO/1000 XT Server Adapter by Intel offers gigabit PCI-X technology over copper cabling and includes the following features and benefits:
- Compatible with PCI-X 1.0, PCI 2.1 and 2.2 compliant server systems
- Meets most industry standards with required certifications and logos
- Other server functions including failover to other technology adaptrs and IP Security
- Supports Dual Address Cycle (DAC) for address spaces larger than 4 GB
- Compliant with SDG-2.0, ACPI and IEEE 802.3 industry standards
- 10/100/1000 auto-negotiation supports mixed bandwidth environments and incremental migration to fast and gigabit Ethernet
- Common driver set with other Intel Ethernet adapters
- Intel PROSet Utility for easy setup
- Compatible with PCI-X 1.0, PCI 2.1 and 2.2 compliant server systems
Warranty
If the server adapter is installed in an IBM machine, the Original warranty of the IBM system will apply (e.g. 3 years). If the warranty for IBM system that the adapter is installed in has expired, the Limited Life Time Warranty supported by the vendor will apply (e.g. Intel).

- Adaptive Load Balancing: alleviate bottlenecks by balancing traffic among adapters.
- Adapter Fault Tolerance: increase up time with automatic redundant links, teaming adapters for increased flexibility in failover situations.
- Advanced remote management: supports Wired for Management (WfM), SNMP, DMI and remote server configuration.
- Traffic Prioritization: improves QoS with support for prioritization of time-sensitive data, resulting in better performance for multimedia, VOIP and business-critical applications.
- Offload: the onboard processor and RAM offloads Interrupt Service Routines (ISRs) so the server CPU can handle more transactions per second.
- Multiple VLANs: allows multiple virtual networks through a single adapter, improving network performance.
- PCI Hot Plug and Active PCI: minimize downtime by installing, upgrading or replacing an adapter with the server running.
Performance specifications as known at time of announcement
The PRO/1000 XT Server Adapter offers gigabit technology over industry standard Category 5 copper cabling, highest network flexibility via PCI-X bus at 64bit/133MHz. With support for packet prioritization (IEEE 802.1p) and Virtual LANs (IEEE 802.1Q), the adapter also optimizes throughput of data for critical applications. This solution offers Wake on LAN for remote wake up of systems, as well as auto negotiation, enabling an easy connection to shared or switched Ethernet running at 10/100/1000 Mbps speeds.
NOTE: Wake on LAN full function expected late in fourth quarter of 2001, with device driver update.

Hardware compatibility
The PRO/1000 XT Server Adapter by Intel supports the following IBM systems:
PCI-X is backwards compatible with conventional PCI products, which allows existing adapters to operate within a PCI environment. Both PCI and PCI-X adapters can be used in either PCI-X systems or a conventional PCI environment, however the bus speed will default to the speed of the slowest adapter.
Software requirements
The adapter is shipped with device drivers for operation with Microsoft Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0, Novell NetWare, SCO Unixware, or Linux.
