General information
The IBM 3449 8mm Tape Library Model 355 or 356 is an automated tape library supported on selected Netfinity(R) server and IBM PC Server systems.

The IBM 3449 Model 355 and 356 can be used for save/restore, program distribution, migration, data interchange, automatic migration of data between disk storage and tape, and mass storage for data archive. Full interchange of data is supported with the IBM 20/40GB 8mm SCSI Tape Drive (76H0485) using 8mm format cartridges. In addition to reading previous 8mm format tape cartridges, the 3449 provides an enhanced functional alternative to 1/4-inch, 4mm, TR3, TR4, or previous 8mm tape drives. Storage and tape management is provided by software such as ADSTAR(R) Distributed Storage Manager (ADSM) and other compatible software offerings.

The IBM 3449 8mm Tape Library Model 355 or 356 provides automation for the latest 8mm Mammoth tape drives. It utilizes 8mm Advanced Metal Evaporated (AME) tape cartridges, with 170 meters of media, that provide 20GB native capacity and up to 40GB with 2:1 hardware controlled data compression, giving the 3449 a typical storage capacity of up to 880GB with compression. It includes two removable 10-cartridge magazines and two bonus cartridge slots for a total capacity of 22 cartridges. The bonus slots can be used for a cleaning cartridge, drive diagnostic cartridge, test tape, or data cartridges. It can be configured with one or two 8mm Mammoth tape drives. The two-drive models provide additional enhanced features such as: faster transfer of data, simultaneous backup, concurrent read-write operations and fault tolerance. The Model 355 is a stand-alone deskside unit and the Model 356 can be mounted in an industry standard EIA-310-D 19-inch rack such as the NetFinity(R) Rack. A bar code reader, allowing for positive tape cartridge identification and inventory, and an operator display are included. The 3449 has a native data rate of 3MB per second and up to 6MB per second with compression on a one-drive model. With a split-dual host library configuration the backup capability of the IBM 3449 8mm Tape Library is up to 43.2GB per hour with compression.

The IBM 3449 8mm Tape Library Model 355 and 356 feature:

  • SCSI Fast/Wide Differential Adapter card for attachment to a Netfinity or PC server
  • Up to 440GB/880GB capacity
  • Two removable 10-cartridge magazines (20-cartridge capacity)

Hardware requirements for IBM systems
The IBM 3449 8mm Tape Library Model 355 or 356 can be attached to Netfinity(R) server or IBM PC Server systems that support attachment with an included IBM 3449 Adapter card. A 4.5 meter SCSI cable is also included. It can be configured with one or two 8mm Mammoth tape drives. The Model 355 is a stand-alone deskside unit and the Model 356 can be mounted in an industry standard EIA-310-D 19-inch rack such as the Netfinity Rack.

The 3449 has two configurations:

  • Base-single host library configuration is intended for attaching the 3449 to a single host, where the library is accessible to the host through one SCSI port.
  • Split-dual host library configuration is intended for attaching the 3449 to two hosts, where the 3449 appears as two separate half-size libraries on two SCSI buses. A second drive, adapter card, and SCSI cable should be ordered for this configuration.

Software requirements
Storage and tape management application software such as ADSM for Windows NT Version 2 is available from IBM, IBM Business Partners, and application partners. Additional software support is available from many industry leading tape application vendors. A list of compatible software is available on MKTTOOLS (document number G325-3310) or from your IBM representative.

Supported operating systems
The IBM 3449 8mm Tape Library Model 355 or 356 is supported on the following operating systems/extensions:

  • Novell Netware Version 4.11
  • Microsoft Windows NT(TM) Server Version 3.51 or 4.0

Compatibility
The 3449 Model 355 or 356 is read and write compatible with other 20GB 8mm cartridges, such as used with the 7331 Model 305 Tape Library or the 7208 Model 341 Tape drive that use data grade, Advanced Metal Evaporated (AME) media. It can also read 7.0GB, 5.0GB, and 2.3GB 8mm metal particle (MP) tape formats.

Limitations
When attaching the 3449 8mm Tape Library to an Netfinity server or IBM PC Server system it is recommended that only one 3449 be attached per adapter.

The 3449 Model 355 or 356 can read but cannot write on 7.0GB, 5.0GB, or 2.3GB 8mm MP tape data cartridges.

Supported software
Not Applicable

Other
One 4.5-meter SCSI cable is included with each library for attachment to a Netfinity server or PC Server system.
