Out of memory error when installing, updating, or rolling back WebSphere Integration Developer on Linux

Question & Answer

Question

Why do I receive the "OutOfMemory" error message when installing, updating, or rolling back WebSphere Integration Developer for WebSphere Software on a Linux operating system?

Cause

On Linux operating systems, the default heap size for IBM Installation Manager is 512 MB, which is not enough for WebSphere Integration Developer when a large number of plug-ins are installed on the file system.

Possible causes are as follows:
a. Localization packs are installed.
b. The product shares the same Eclipse environment with other products that have a large number of plug-ins.

Answer

The workaround is to modify the IBMIM.ini file in IBM Installation Manager's installation directory to add an additional parameter, "-Xmx1024m". Restart IBM Installation Manager and then perform the update. By default, IBM Installation Manager's IBMIM.ini file is installed in /opt/IBM/InstallationManager/eclipse.

This issue affects other Rational products as well.
