Question
How are the Oracle redo logs managed during a backup or cloning of an Oracle database using the FlashCopy Manager.
Cause
The redo logs are saved based on the type of flashcopy that is being performed regardless of whether it is an Oracle implementation with or without SAP®.
Answer
FlashCopy Manager backs up the redo logs only under specific circumstances.
- When performing a clone copy of the Oracle data to an alternate machine, the process will copy all of the data and also the currently active online redo logs.
- When performing an offline flashcopy backup of the Oracle database, this will copy the database as well as the currently active online redo logs.
- When performing an online flashcopy backup of the Oracle database, only the database is copied, the redo logs are not included.
In all cases, the archive redo logs are not included as part of the flashcopy. It is recommended that the Oracle redo logs are backed up from the production machine using tools like Oracle RMAN or SAP BR*Tools. This would provide the capability to have the archived redo logs available for restore if needed.
Note:
When used with SAP, the FlashCopy Manager product uses the SAP BR*Tools interface for the snapshot backup and offloaded backup to the Tivoli Storage Manager.
When SAP is not involved, FlashCopy Manager initiates the snapshot and may interface with Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases - Data Protection for Oracle for an offloaded backup to the Tivoli Storage Manager.
