Opening an OLE video object in IBM i2 Analyst's Notebook results in an un-responsive chart

Troubleshooting


Problem

When opening an OLE video object which has been embedded in an Analyst's Notebook chart, after closing the video player the Notebook chart becomes un-responsive and/or displays graphical corruption.

Cause

This has been identified as a product defect under APAR PO01935.

Environment

This issue only occurs when certain media players are used to play the video file. Windows Media Player is known to cause the issue.

Resolving The Problem

There are several known workarounds for this issue:

1. Closing & re-opening the Notebook chart after viewing the media file, will make the chart responsive again.

2. Using an alternative media player (such as VLC Media Player) will play the media file without making the chart un-responsive.

3. Insert the OLE object as a linked object:

When inserting an OLE Object entity a dialog will appear.

  • Select Create from File
  • Click on Browse
  • Select the video you would like to embed on the chart and click OK.
  • Click on the Link tickbox

  • Click on OK.
