Ontape restore using remote tape device fails when remote shell (rsh) access is disabled on Unix server

Troubleshooting

Problem

Ontape restore using remote tape device fails when remote shell (rsh) access is disabled on Unix server

Diagnosing The Problem

If remote shell (rsh) access is disabled on a (target) Unix server, an ontape restore may fail with a 'connection refused' error while attempting a physical or a logical restore.

    example:
    ontape -p
Please mount tape 1 on host-a:/tmp/inf.bak and press Return to continue ...
    Remote tape report:

    rcmd: connect: host-a: Connection refused
Physical restore failed - function read archive backup failed code 1 errno 0
    Program over.

    ontape -r
Please mount tape 1 on host-a:/tmp/inf.bak and press Return to continue ...

    Remote tape report:

    rcmd: connect: host-a.: Connection refused
Physical restore failed - function read archive backup failed code 1 errno 0

Resolving The Problem

Use an appropriate command to set the environment variable DBREMOTECMD to point to the ssh (Secured Shell) executable. For example,

    setenv   DBREMOTECMD /usr/bin/ssh
