ODBC Error: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Function Sequence error

Problem

This technote helps resolve an error that might appear when using a Cisco ASA firewall on the same network as the IBM Rational RequisitePro database.

Symptom

The full error message is:

"The project named 'XXXX...'could not be opened, because there was a problem opening the database.

ODBC Error: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Function Sequence error              

-Unable to free ODBC connection"

Cause

This error occurs because Cisco ASA firewalls have the option to enable SQL net packet inspection which will block SQL queries to the database if they are larger than the set buffer limit.

Resolving The Problem

Turning off the SQL net packet inspection will resolve this issue and allow projects to open without any problems.
