Problem
This document describes how to obtain and use the Microsoft process monitor tool.
Resolving The Problem
Process monitor (PROCMON) is a tool supplied by Microsoft that captures Windows events and can log them for problem determination and debug.
To obtain the tool, search the Web for 'Microsoft process monitor download' and you find a hit that directs you to the appropriate site where you can download the tool. This site also has instructions on installing or deploying the tool.
There is no installation process; it is a simple matter of extracting the file to deploy it. The compressed file contains the user license agreement, a help file, and the executable program. Refer to the help file distributed with the tool for detailed instructions or questions about how to use the tool.
When you start the executable program (elevated Windows authority is required), it starts logging events immediately. Re-create whatever problem it is that you are debugging as soon as possible (as the log fills quickly).
As soon as the problem being debugged occurs, do the following:

- Switch back to the process monitor window and press Ctrl+E to stop capturing events.
- Using the Save icon in the toolbar, press Ctrl+S or select Save from the File menu to save the events to a log file.
