Number of Data Values requested exceeds maximum allowed (1000000) when creating a scatter plot or histogram.

Troubleshooting

Problem

In SPSS for Windows, a standard simple scatterplot is created with a file containing over 1 million records. After waiting for 2 minutes I am prompted with one of the following error message in the Output Viewer window. "Number of Data Values requested exceeds maximum allowed (1000000) " OR "The requested chart cannot be drawn because the application has run out of memory." In other cases where I have much less number of cases but using a lot of variables to create a Matrix Scatter, SPSS will either hang or come back with the following error in the Output Viewer: The requested chart cannot be drawn Why can't SPSS handle this much data in a scatterplot or histogram?
