Question & Answer
Question
You are not able to connect to the vCenter from the IBM Cloud data center VPN. You cannot access the vCenter web client. The message you see is that the connection times out. What are troubleshooting steps?
Answer
Here are several things to help you debug your connectivity issue. If you need to open a support case for assistance, include the following commands and their output in text format within your case:
- Verify your account VPN privileges
- Try to ping the vCenter IP: ping <vCenter-ip>
- Also try traceroute, which may show where the route fails: tracert <vCenter-ip>
- Try to ping the ESXi hosts to verify the route to the hosts
- Try to SSH to the ESXi hosts and the vCenter IP address
Credentials and IP addresses are all available from the IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions portal. Select the specific instance to see the details.
If none of the previous commands work, there is likely an issue with your VPN connectivity. For that situation, open a support case to work with IBM Cloud Support on VPN access.
If the previous commands work, then verify the status of vCenter as follows:
- SSH to one of the ESXi hosts and ping vCenter
- On the ESXi host, issue this command to list all the VM's: vim-cmd vmsvc/getallvms
- Find the vCenter VM id from the list
- Use the vCenter VM id in this command to check the VM status: vim-cmd vmsvc/power.getstate
- This command output shows whether it is powered on
Verify the permissions for the IBM Cloud infrastructure account. For permissions information, refer to Requirements for the IBM Cloud infrastructure account.
