Reports do not finish (for example say "Fetching values, please wait..." forever) using "Reports - Run" (report generator) for some reports only

Troubleshooting


Problem

User clicks "Reports - Run". User chooses report/paramaters, and clicks "Send to Application". User chooses to send to Excel. Excel opens in the background, and the report may appear to start running. However, it never seems to finish.
Problem only affects one/some reports.

Symptom

The symptom varies slightly depending on client device environment:
Client device #1
In one real-life customer client PC environment, after clicking "Send to Application", Excel freezes. User has to eventually give up (by using Windows task manager to close Excel).
Client device #2
Using the same database/report, but a different client PC, user finds that the report starts running, but gets stuck in the "Fetching values, please wait..." stage. That status never changes (the report never finishes).
Client device #3
After sending the 'bad' report to Excel:
  • Microsoft Excel appears
  • It starts opening/refreshing that report
  • At the bottom-left, user sees "Fetching values, please wait..."
  • MOST CURIOUSLY it then seems to spend approximately a second or so updating a single row at a time
    • You can actually see it building the report (one row of cells at a time)
  • The report did eventually finish (after approximately 11-15 minutes).
