Question & Answer

Question

Are jumbo frames supported for storage?

Answer

Answer

Within the IBM Cloud IaaS environment, jumbo frames are fully supported. A jumbo frame is defined as an Ethernet packet with a payload size greater than the standard maximum transmission unit (MTU) of 1500 bytes. You can change the payload size to allow up to 9000 bytes of data to be transmitted in local area networks that support at least 1 Gbps connections.

Switching to the use of jumbo frames should boost performance as you will be able to send more data in a shorter period of time. It is recommended that you ensure that server interfaces and router devices, which are managing traffic to NFS or Block storage volumes, have their MTU set to 9000 bytes.
