How to set a connection timeout to an LDAP user registry in WebSphere Application Server

Question & Answer

Question

How do I set a connection timeout to the LDAP server in IBM® WebSphere® Application Server?

Answer

The Search timeout field determines the LDAP connection timeout period, in seconds. It is located in this page of the administrative console:

1. Click Security > Global Security.

2. Under Available Realm Definitions, choose "Standalone LDAP registry" and click Configure.

In rare cases, it may be useful to set the standard Sun JNDI property com.sun.jndi.ldap.connect.timeout

This property sets a specified timeout value, in milliseconds, to be used when opening a communications link to the LDAP server.

  1. Click Security > Global Security.
  2. Under Available Realm Definitions, choose "Standalone LDAP registry" and click Configure.
  3. Under Additional properties, click Custom properties.
  4. Click New.
  5. In the Name field, type com.sun.jndi.ldap.connect.timeout

Important: This custom property name is case sensitive.
  6. In the Value field, type in the number that you wish to specify as the timeout value. The value is in milliseconds.
  7. Click Apply and Save, then restart the WebSphere Application Server.
