Renumbering requirements and requirement types that have multiple documents

Question & Answer

Question

How do you renumber requirements that have multiple documents of the same requirement type using IBM® Rational® RequisitePro®?

Answer

The following example illustrates how to renumber documents and requirements:

Document 1 has FEAT 1-20
Document 2 has FEAT 21-30
Document 3 has FEAT 31-40
Document 4 has FEAT 41-50

The requirement you are to renumber is FEAT 25, and you need it to be FEAT 29.

  1. Open Document 2
  2. Highlight FEAT 25.
  3. Select ReqPro > Requirement > Cut
  4. Enter a space between FEAT 29 and FEAT 30 and place the cursor between the two FEATs
  5. Select ReqPro > Requirement > Paste

Now FEAT 25 should be between FEAT 29 and FEAT 30, as shown below:

FEAT 21
FEAT 22
FEAT 23
FEAT 24
FEAT 26
FEAT 27
FEAT 28
FEAT 29
FEAT 25
FEAT 30

After that, execute the renumber requirements tool by selecting File > Project Administration > Renumber Requirements.

In the Renumber Requirements dialog box, select the requirement type from the drop down box and check Renumber Requirements of this Type.

In the Order of processing display box you will see the following:

Document 2
Document 1
Document 4
Document 3

Note: FEAT 25 is in Document 2.

Position the documents correctly so that when it renumbers starting from FEAT 1, sequential order the requirements in the documents and retain the original numbering and renumbering only FEAT 25 to FEAT 29.

The correct order of processing for this example is:

Document 1
Document 2
Document 3
Document 4

When renumbering, Document 1 which has FEAT 1, will be processed, not changing any requirement numbers because the first requirement is already FEAT 1. Also all other requirements are in sequential order (FEAT 2, FEAT 3, etc).

When the renumbering tool gets to Document 2, it will identify that FEAT 25 does not exist. Once this requirement is identified as missing the renumbering tool will renumber all of the remaining requirements to be sequentially
FEAT 24 = FEAT 24
FEAT 26 --> FEAT 25
FEAT 27 --> FEAT 26
FEAT 28 --> FEAT 27
FEAT 29 --> FEAT 28
FEAT 25 --> FEAT 29
FEAT 30 --> Unchanged (correct position and numbering)

After the renumbering is complete, your requirements will be in sequential order.
